50 years, WOW!
Robert Ahrens first started in the hearing aid business in 1968 – 50 years ago! When we think about it, it is almost hard to believe it has been that long and it is very interesting to see how things have changed, but also how they have stayed the same throughout the years.
Obviously, plenty has changed not only in our world in general but also with hearing aids. Robert Ahrens started out fitting hearing aids built into eyeglasses along with body worn hearing aids. Today, almost every type of hearing aid sits in a small package behind your ear, in your ear, or a combination of both. Almost all hearing technology now has digital processing power far greater than the computers which sent us to the moon. This means they have the power to help us distinguish sounds better, give us multiple settings for varied environments, allow for multiple assistive devices, connect to our phones, etc… It is obvious we have come a long way and the changes are quite apparent but, something we don’t typically think about is what has not changed.
As far as hearing aids are concerned, professional service, after care, and professional know how and ability are simply not things that have been replaced by technology. In this instance, we are not just referring to service or after care as a “nice to have” luxury. These are things that actually make a significant difference in how well you hear with your hearing aids (that you spent a lot of money on), how good they feel when wearing them every day, ability to keep them working and you hearing to the best of your ability at all times, etc…
The importance of service and professional ability has not changed and is no less important today than it was 50 years ago. Some may not need it, or want it – but the fact is that it makes a difference. Small business, independent, skilled professional, etc… are not words thrown around lightly – we know these things matter greatly and will continue to matter 50 years from now as well!
