At Ahrens Hearing Center, we perform thorough Audiometric Evaluations to gauge your hearing abilities and limitations before even considering hearing aids. We’ve been providing patients in the Paramus and Hackensack areas with audiology and hearing aid services since 1968. Our experience has taught us that to best serve you, we need to know all about you, your lifestyle, your hearing and medical history.
We begin by gathering your full case history, which helps to determine possible cause of hearing loss. Once the interview portion of is completed, we proceed to administer the following tests:
- Video otoscopy
- Tympanometry
- Air conduction tone testing
- Bone conduction tone testing
- Speech discrimination / Word recognition
- MCL / UCL testing
All of our Audiometric Evaluations are painless and offer us a better understanding of your hearing loss, including the type, cause and severity. Additionally, we verify hearing aid functionality with Real Ear Measurement, the gold standard in hearing aid benefit verification.
We currently provide hearing health care services for patients living in the Fair Lawn, Hackensack and Paramus areas in New Jersey. Call (201)794-0120 or contact us online to schedule your hearing evaluation today.

Hearing Aid Fittings
The bulk of what we do is encompassed in the term “fitting” hearing aids – this is more about that.
Fittings
Fitting hearing aids involves much more than loading a program into the device and placing them on your ears. While technology has evolved significantly, the best hearing aid fittings typically require many fine tuning adjustments to land on the right sound for you. Additionally, the physical fit of the hearing aids is equally important. Whether they fit completely in your ear, behind your ear, or a combination of both – there is an art to making hearing aids fit your ear well. A proper physical fitting of a hearing aid will result in something you can wear all day everyday and enable the proper amount of sound to reach your ear drum with minimal whistling or buzzing noises (feedback.)
We will also use Real Ear Measurements to confirm that your hearing aids are providing the right amount of amplification. We’ll insert a thin tube into your ear canal that is connected to a microphone and will be used to measure the volume of sound near your eardrum with the use of hearing aids. Then, we’ll carefully insert your devices and check sounds, at different pitches and volumes to find a comfortable level of amplification and program your device accordingly. This is the only way to verify that your hearing aids are providing the right benefit for you.
Proper hearing aid fittings, programming, and physical adjustments are essential for you to get the most benefit out of your investment. Making adjustments to find the right settings may be accomplished over a series of visits.
Care and Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance will extend the life of your hearing aids and keep them in prime working condition. In addition to fitting and programming your devices, we’ll teach youhow to clean and maintain them as well as change the batteries. Hearing aids sit in/ your ear which is a tough environment for a small electronic device and you can expect to need ongoing maintenance.
At Ahrens Hearing Center, our service doesn’t stop when your purchase hearing aids from us. In fact, we recommend that you bring your devices in to our offices for quarterly cleaning and maintenance checks.

Hearing Aid Sales
When you’re facing a health issue, the last thing in the world you want is a sales pitch. Hearing aid sales and the professionals associated with them have for years “sold” hearing aids when in reality, good professionals have always sold better hearing. Better hearing does involve a product (hearing aids) but it also requires the right service and fitting to make that product work well for you. When you think of hearing aid sales, you should think of purchasing a product coupled with a service and what is involved in accomplishing the final goal.
At Ahrens Hearing Center, we understand this. We don’t have sales quotas. We don’t make a commission on the hearing aids or other products we provide. And we will never sell you something you don’t need. It allows us a clearer path to the best outcome for you. Our goal is simple: to help improve your quality of life through better hearing. We’ve been serving patients in the Hackensack and Paramus areas of northern New Jersey since 1968. We strive to provide you with expert audiology and hearing aid services. And we value the trust you’ve placed in us.
When you walk through our doors, we want you to feel like family. We start your service with a consultation, in which we’ll discuss your hearing and medical history and ask questions, such as:
- Why did you schedule your appointment? What symptoms are you experiencing? Do you have any special concerns?
- Which environments cause you the most difficulty hearing?
- Do you have family history of hearing loss?
- Do you take any over-the-counter or prescription medications?
- Do you have a history of exposure to loud noise?
We urge you to bring a loved one with you to your appointments. He or she may be able to offer additional insight into your hearing loss.
We follow with in-depth audiometric evaluations. If the results of your tests indicate that you are a good candidate for hearing aids, we’ll begin a demonstration of different devices, in multiple styles, with varying features to find the right hearing aids to match your needs, budget, lifestyle, as well as any cosmetic concerns you may have.
When your hearing aids arrive, we’ll have you come in so that we can fit and program them properly. We’ll teach you how to clean and maintain your hearing aids at home. But our service doesn’t end there. We include a Complete Hearing Healthcare (CHHC) program with the purchase of your hearing aids. This program includes hearing aid cleaning, testing, hearing aid adjustments and reprogramming.
For comprehensive hearing healthcare and the most patient-focused service in northern New Jersey, schedule your appointment today. We’re located at 23-13 Broadway in Fair Lawn, but we also serve patients throughout the Hackensack and Paramus communities.
